FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

Q?

What is a UAV,RPA or Drone?

A.

UAV stands for ‘Unmanned Aerial Vehicle’ and refers to the flying platform we use to conduct aerial photography and videography. Other names include ‘Remotely Piloted Aircraft’ (RPA) or colloquially as a ‘Drone’.

Q?

Who is CASA?

A.

CASA standards for the Civil Aviation Safety Authority of Australia, and is the Australian body who’s primary function is to conduct the safety regulation of civil air operations in Australia. CASA governs the rules and regulations in regards to drone flying, for licensed commercial operators as well as hobbyists.

Q?

What can a Drone be used for?

A.

Our drone’s are used for capturing aerial photography and video in a fast and efficient manner. There are many applications across a wide range of industries, including aerial surveying & mapping which includes environmental monitoring, building and asset inspections, construction progress reporting, marketing purposes and many more. To learn more please see our Services pages.

Q?

Where can you fly?

A.

Helivision Solutions can fly at most locations across Australia. Our quick set-up and ability to launch from almost anywhere enables a fast, flexible and efficient service.

Our comprehensive operating procedures and safety management systems have allowed CASA to grant Helivision Solutions special exemptions to operate in a wider range of locations than is generally permitted.

There are however restrictions for all Drone operators in relation to operations close to major airports (such as Sydney Kingsford Smith Airport and Bankstown) and over populated areas. The restricted area includes any location within 3nm (5.5km) of a major airport.

Q?

How far can you fly?

A.

Our Drones are generally flown in relatively close proximity to the controller, to ensure visual line of sight and control of our machines at all times. The radio signal and video downlink limits is approximately 1.5km from the controllers location.

Q?

How long can you fly for?

A.

The length of time we can spend in the air varies depending on many factors including payload (camera’s and batteries), weather conditions and the type of flying conducted.

On average, we can fly for up to:

15 minutes with the DJI Inspire 1 Pro with X5
18 minutes with the DJI Inspire 1 Pro with X3

Battery changes are very quick, and it can be as little as a few minutes before our Drone is back in the air flying again!

Q?

How high can you fly?

A.

Our drone’s are capable of flying to many thousands of feet, however legally we can only fly up to 400ft (121m) above ground level. This is to ensure separation with manned air traffic such as aircraft and helicopters. On average, most of our filming/photography is conducted at much lower altitudes, typically below 200ft (61m) AGL. This allows us to get close perspectives of our subject as well as wide vista’s and district views.

Q?

Can you fly in any weather?

A.

For aerial photography and video, fine conditions with wind speeds less than 15km/hr are ideal. Our drones however can fly in wind speeds up to 30km/hr, thanks to advanced stabilisation technology.

Q?

What camera equipment do you use?

A.

Helivision Solutions currently operates with the DJI X3 and X5 camera’s. This allows us to cater for a wide range of photography and video requirements, including very high resolution images and 4K video. Our Drones are fitted with the latest camera specific, brushless gimbals which means images captured are completely free from vibration, producing ultra smooth, quality footage.

Q?

Can I fit my own camera to the UAV?

A.

Each camera that we use is specially fitted to each drone, so that it integrates seamlessly with the drone system and is balanced perfectly on a custom gimbal. We can only operate with the camera’s listed. This ensures consistently high quality photography and video with minimal post production editing required.

Q?

Do you need a licence to fly?

A.

To operate Drones commercially, it is a requirement to hold a UAV Operators Certificate issued by CASA. Individual’s controlling the Drone must also be individually licensed by CASA. These licenses are necessary to ensure high standards are maintained in regards to operation in different airspace categories and safe operating procedures are developed and sustained.

Q?

Can I hire the UAV without the controller or camera operator?

A.

Unfortunately it is not possible to hire a Drone without a controller unless the intended purpose is not for commercial use. A licence is required for operators wishing to conduct commercial operations and also for individual controllers. Operating the Drones requires a high level of expertise and skill to ensure a safe and effective operation.

It can however be arranged to allow a client to operate the camera controls. Please contact us to discuss your requirements.
